Biography

Gary J. Erwin graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University (GVSU). At GVSU, he was a member of the university hockey team, served as fiction editor of the school literary journal, Amaranthus, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

He earned his Master of Fine Arts in English and Creative Writing from Western Michigan University, where he studied under author Stuart Dybek, Jaime Gordon and Nancy Eimers.

Erwin has held positions in many fields and began his career as a communications specialist for FEMA Engineering, a U.S. military contractor. In the mid 1990s to early 2000, he served as fiction and contributing editor of the literary journal The MacGuffin. During his career, he also served as director of Publications and lecturer of Communications and Literature at Kettering University, as well as executive director of Marketing & Communications for Henry Ford College, where he helped launch the institution's new brand, institutional name and website. He has consulted with Fortune 500 corporations, nonprofit organizations and technology firms across the country, presented his research and papers at national professional conferences and has taught at several universities and colleges.

Erwin’s creative and nonfiction work has appeared in many journals, reviews, media outlets and conference proceedings, including The Sun, Sante Fe Literary Review, Clockhouse, Louisville Review, Great Lakes Review, Bull, The MacGuffin, Red Cedar Review, Technology Century, Society of Technical Communications Global Communications Conference Proceedings, and National Commission for Cooperative Education. His creative work has also earned two Pushcart Prize nominations and has been anthologized in The PrePress Awards Volume II: Michigan Voices and the Trail Fossils Review Best of 2024 Press Anthology. His book of short stories, Trail Crossing Sixteen Counties, was published in 2019. He is currently working on a novel-in-stories titled The Injury List and a novel, Cut River Redemption.

He lives with his family and an assortment of critters in Clarkston, Mich., and believes that ±«Óãtv offers an education unrivaled by other institutions because of the University's focus on social concerns and application of the school's rigorous education to issues of conscience.
